Heroes for Recovery is a recognition program made possible by Mental Health America of Indiana in partnership with Choices. This program celebrates the dedication and commitment of those that truly promote recovery of individuals in their ongoing treatment of serious and persistent mental illness.
Silouan Green is an inspirational speaker and performer and creator of The Ladder UPP life skills recovery program. He has spent the last five years traveling the country looking for those struggling to find meaning and purpose in their lives, especially those who have undergone extreme trauma such as veterans, prisoners, victims of abuse, and anyone who feels trapped by life.
Silouan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University and was then commissioned an officer in the US Marines Corps. Silouan’s service in the Marines ended when he was disability discharged due to injuries suffered in a jet crash during training.
Years ago when I was just a young man (who thought he was invincible as a US Marine), my own actions, a horrible jet crash that I barely survived, and a world that often feeds upon itself all contributed to putting me in a dark hole from which I thought there was no escape
A shattered career, body and soul - stricken with severe PTSD, suicidal compulsions, insomnia, pills, depression, wanting and waiting to die - I found hope after a late night struggle with what looked like a demon. Whether it was a supernatural struggle, or a battle with the insanity of my own mind, I ended the night completely worn out, drenched in sweat as if I’d just run a marathon, but buoyed with the firm belief that I had faced death and now had nothing to lose by doing everything I could to discover purpose and build a new life.
