A donor advised fund is a flexible way to manage your charitable giving and a cost-effective alternative to establishing a private foundation.

While Mental Health America of Indiana does not directly manage Donor Advised Funds, there are a number of financial institutions and community trusts that can assist you in establishing your fund.

A charitable trust is a contract between you and Mental Health America of Indiana where you transfer cash, stock, or property in exchange for an income for life. The exchange allows you to bypass capital gains taxes, diversify your assets, and reduce income tax as well as estate taxes.

Remember that a charitable bequest can reduce capital gains taxes and protect your estate from excessive taxes while leaving a legacy to Mental Health America of Indiana. You can designate a fixed percentage of your estate, a fixed amount, or a residual amount.

 Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds that have been held for one or more years can provide tax savings for you since the capital gain on unrealized appreciation is waived.
